Challenge

Conducts independent research, analysis and assessment of optical instruments and systems. Develops results from this work for application to current and future space missions; makes use of facilities and simulators to support such activities.

Performs technical work such as design, analysis, and simulation in optical instruments and systems, and leads less-experienced scientists, engineers and students in their work.

Verifies and validates the design work and analyses done by contractors for CSA projects in the area of optical instruments and systems, participates in formal Technical Reviews, monitors testing activities, and participates in the resolution of problems.

Plans and develops the technical aspects of Requests for Proposals (RFP) and Statements of Work (SOW), reviews proposals received from bidders, and serves as Scientific Authority for R & D projects which are contracted out.

Proposes and initiates new missions and technology development contracts in the area of optical instruments and systems.

Reviews and evaluates new knowledge and developments in optical instruments and systems through the review of scientific, technical and patent literature. Anticipates and analyzes current and long-term technological trends and opportunities in optical instruments and systems. Based on these findings, provides recommendations to the Manager as to the direction of future research.

Provides advice, guidance, scientific expertise, recommendations and technical support in optical instruments and systems to CSA scientists and engineers, Canadian space industry, universities, research institutions, other space agencies and other government departments.

Publishes papers and reports in scientific journals and makes technical presentations.
